Textile & Fabric Sourcing from India: Buyer’s Guide

India is a major source of yarns, woven and knitted fabrics and finished textiles. Clear technical specifications and approved lab dips or handlooms prevent costly bulk disputes.

Note: Destination import rules, residue limits, labelling and documentation requirements change. Confirm current official requirements before shipment or payment.

1. Specify the fabric correctly

  • Fibre composition and percentage
  • Construction (woven/knit), GSM, width, finish
  • Colour standard (Pantone / lab dip), hand feel notes
  • End use: apparel, home, technical, industrial
  • Any compliance needs (e.g. restricted substances for your market)

2. Sampling workflow

  1. Request quality sample or existing stock reference
  2. Approve lab dips / strike-offs before bulk yarn dyeing where needed
  3. Freeze bulk production against approved sample and written tolerances
  4. Agree shrinkage, colour fastness and defect criteria

3. MOQ, lead time and capacity

Ask for dyeing lot sizes, loom or knitting capacity and peak-season calendars. Private-label packing and roll lengths should be stated in the RFQ.

4. Testing and inspection

Plan fabric tests (GSM, colour fastness, pilling, tensile as relevant) and optional final inspection before shipment. Keep certificates with the shipment file.

5. Commercial terms

Quote on a clear Incoterm, define payment milestones and confirm HS classification for your product line. Use the RFQ template.

Frequently asked questions

What fabric details matter most in an RFQ?

Composition, GSM, width, construction, colour standard, quantity, packing and required tests.

Should I approve bulk before lab dips?

For dyed or printed programs, approve colour standards before bulk dyeing whenever possible.

How do I compare two fabric quotes?

Normalize Incoterm, width yield, defect policy and test coverage — not only price per metre.
